My student-teaching placement through the 2020-2021 school year was in a third grade class at Grant Elementary in San Lorenzo USD. We spent the first seven months in distance learning, and the last two in a hybrid in-person/distance model. Regardless, it's been a productive school year! Below is a daily hybrid calendar, a gallery of "action" shots/in-person work and some competencies I have mastered this year. Note that small group meetings consist of 6-7 students, and the full class is 23 students. (10 in-person, 13 distance learning)
Daily CalendarIn-Person Learning
9:20-9:40 - Students arrive at school. 9:40 - Full class instruction begins. In-person activities tend to focus on hands-on tasks not possible in distance learning (ie hands-on science, physical math manipulatives). Some activities that happen on a regular basis:
11:10 - Instruction resumes. Some tasks that occur during this block:
Distance Learning 9:00-12:30 - Students log on for Music and/or PE and complete asynchronous work. 12:30-1:00 - Small groups meet. The focus of these changes based on the needs of the students, but generally focus on reading, math, and writing. 1:00-2:00 - Full class instruction begins. The list of activities is as close to in-person instruction as possible. 2:00-2:30 - More small groups meet. Like with the earlier block, exact content varies based on needs of students. 2:40-3:10 - English Language Learners meet. These meetings focus on supporting ELLs as they work towards mastery of English. This is done via preloading/reviewing classroom material, and by playing scaffolded games where students talk with each other. 3:10 - Students are dismissed. |
